Georgia Eats

Georgia Eats

After a long day of wandering through Savannah’s streets and squares, we were more than ready for some sustenance. The weather was drizzly, although not cold, and it was almost 2 pm. Vic’s on the River (Rousakis Riverfront Plaza) seemed a great option. Open, elegant, views of the river, and a great menu. We were seated promptly, and then abandoned. Forever. Okay, I exaggerate. A table of two ladies was seated next to us, and when they started wondering where the server was, I took it upon myself to go to the hostess station and ask if we could get a server. On the plus side, the manager, or owner, heard and immediately came and gave both tables water, took our orders, and then got a waiter to take over our area. She did not just trust that he would take care of it. She checked back regularly and insisted on buying us dessert. That is the way to handle a customer complaint, or bad experience.

I usually order wine, or beer. But, I couldn’t resist trying the Persian Pear cocktail. The ingredients included an herbed gin, pear liqueur and ginger beer...It was delicious. In fact, I must have moaned out loud because the lady next to me, who had been waiting a while like we had, pulled a When Harry met Sally and ordered what I was having. The crawfish beignet appetizer was a perfect blend of sweet crawfish meat, and spice, with a lovely crust. I would have called them empanadas, but they say beignet, so beignet it is. Chris enjoyed his beet salad and his shrimp po boy sandwich. I order the crab, shrimp and oyster stew, thinking I was being healthy. Unfortunately, although delicious, it probably took a whole cow to produce that much cream...

They bought us dessert, so we shared vanilla ice cream and berries in a think praline shell. I think I gained 10 pounds just looking at it.

I am confident that if you go to Vic’s on the River, they will absolutely have their act together. If for some reason they don’t, they will fix it.

On the opposite end of the restaurant spectrum is Ocmulgee Brewpub. A casual place in Macon Georgia where you order at the counter and have the food delivered. I have been trying to think of when I have ever had a more pleasant or professional or charming person at the counter. I am trying. Still can’t. I had their cheeseburger and fries, which were cooked perfectly. Their amber beer, called Float Daze, and described as “A smooth caramel body, hopped to perfection leaving you dazed, confused and wanting more...” Yep.

I sure wish, wherever I lived, that they would open up next to me. Their beer, their sense of humor, the high quality of their food and beer..!
