Hi.

Welcome to our blog. We are documenting our midlife adventure across the USA on the road. Please join us and follow along. We would love to hear from you!

Plymouth Rock. THE Rock?

Plymouth Rock. THE Rock?

There are a few musts in Plymouth, and of course the number one is to gaze upon Plymouth Rock. Who could resist visiting the very spot the Pilgrims landed on our shores in 1620? Of course, my question was, as yours surely is, how do we know that this rock is the actual rock? The answer from the official park ranger standing by was that of course there is no way to be certain, but based on oral histories and historical records we are fairly sure. Oral histories from almost 400 years ago? Who knew the Pilgrims were so chatty?

The ROCK!

The ROCK!

I am willing to accept the rock as the rock, because it takes me happy to think that I stood right where the colony began. It was also great it was a short walk from Wood’s seafood where we enjoyed a cup of seafood chowder and a lobster roll. The food was fresh and delicious, and prompt. The prices for lobster in Maine and Massachusetts were extremely reasonable. The setting was not fancy, although the views of the bay were lovely, and if you timed it right you could watch the boats bringing in the lobsters.

We enjoyed strolling through town, reading all of the historical plaques, and checking out the local lobster sculpture decorating completion. Reminded us of South Dakota’s bison completion, or Sonoma County’s Peanuts characters.

If you are an American history geek, or if you just love quaint old towns, beautiful views, good food and local brew, Plymouth is a great destination.
