Bo Brooks Baltimore tradition
What is the one thing you must do, and I say must, in Maryland? Yes, you could visit Fort McHenry, the Orioles stadium at Camden Yard...but the must do is to eat Blue crabs in season. Now I love Dungeness crab, and pretty much all sea food, but there is a mystique surrounding the Maryland crabs.
On our way from Pennsylvania to Virginia we made the critical stop in Baltimore at Bo Brooks. This restaurant is on the water, with views of some multi million dollar “boat” estate. I can imagine that in the summer time, you wait for hours. There is a Tiki bar out front, and a large restaurant inside.
The wait staff are efficient, friendly and all around adorable. Tay, or Te, or? Was our very helpful waiter. We ordered 6 medium crabs and they were delivered and literally dropped on the table (covered with paper fortunately). Chris had a delicious chowder/seafood soup that was tomato based with a touch of cream and lots of crab and veggies. I enjoyed a green salad, just to say I had veggies!
We chose to have a tutorial on how to eat the crab. Chris somehow managed to eat his and keep his hands clean. Me? All in. Smashing the crabs, picking through the meat, and sucking on the claws. I had to wash my hands three times! The meat was sweet, and absorbed the spices nicely.
If I were to compare to Dungeness, I would say the main difference is how they are prepared, and how we eat them. Although I do think the belly meat on the blue crab is sweeter than Dungeness.
So many menu options , so little room. And the price? The soup, salad, crabs, and my Bloody Mary (super cool Bloody Mary make it yourself bar) total was $58. Maryland, I love you.
