Elwood's Shack and Gladys' Diner
We arrived in Memphis and headed straight to Elwood’s Shack. If you want unpretentious, affordable, high quality Memphis BBQ, you should head there too. Elwood’s faces the Lowes’ parking lot, and has no street frontage. Easy to find if you know where to look. The pulled pork pork sandwich was out of this world. I enjoyed it, even though I had ordered pulled chicken! You have your choice of with our without Cole slaw on the bun. I chose with and was not disappointed. The one thing I have noticed about BBQ restaurants in the South is that they don’t seem to sell beer or wine. Soft drinks or tea, sweetened or unsweetened.
We were so busy touring Graceland and seeing Elvis’ planes and cars and clothes and other exhibits, that we chose to have a quick lunch at Gladys’ diner on the property. Named after Elvis’ mother you had your choice of hot dogs, burgers, fried Peanut Butter and Banana sandwiches (cooked in butter or bacon grease), fries, and shakes. There is a steak house on the property named after Elvis’ dad Vernon. We didn’t eat there since we were headed to Beale street that night. The good news is there are options, as well as numerous gift shops with Elvis souvenirs. Elvis’ estate was only worth 1 million dollars when he died. When Lisa Marie inherited the estate in 1994 it was worth $100 million, and is now estimated at $300 million. I think our visit helped that estate grow :)
