Couldn't Love Loveless More
Dining in Nashville is like any other city. If you are in the highly touristy downtown, you will get decent bar food. If you want something a little more authentically southern, or up to foodie standards, you don’t have to venture far. We had three enjoyable dining experiences in Nashville.
Woolworths on 5th was a delight. Opened in February, 2018 in the old Woolworth building, sight of the lunch counter protests in the 60’s, the restaurant has embraced that history. There are photos on the walls that depict the 1960s events, and the diner is restored to its original decor. The food was delicious, but don’t count on anything healthy. It is full southern comfort food. We loved the fried chicken, collard greens, mashed potatoes, and Mac n cheese. We couldn’t resist sharing a chocolate malt after, and waddled back to the RV. If you go, please ask for Edward. He was the best waiter. Efficient and friendly, and a true professional.
Whiskey Kitchen was a great place for lunch. We didn’t elect to try any whiskey, but their selection was incredible. They had Irish whiskey, Scotch whiskey, Tennessee whiskey, Kentucky bourbon...well you get the idea! I did enjoy my fried green tomato BLT and wedge salad. Chris had a delicious Cobb salad with grilled prawns. We both enjoyed local brew. I had the Yazoo Gerst, Amber. Chris had the Black Abbey Rose, a blonde ale.
Our favorite, and apparently the favorite of the masses from 4 surrounding states, was Loveless. We had to wait an hour and a half for a table. In the rain. It was so worth it. The homemade biscuits, they make 10,000 a day, are refillable, with honey, and local preserves. I loved my cocktail made with local moonshine and lemonade, which I surely needed after the wait! The fried chicken and slow cooked green beans were truly transcendental. The fried green tomatoes, to be honest, were not my favorite. Perhaps they are not in season? I got mostly corn meal flavor, and no real tomato. Chris had the daily special, which was a slow smoked brisket. Oh my! So tender and so flavorful. The mashed potatoes and gravy and the Mac n cheese were excellent. WE didn’t sample the creamed corn, but heard neighboring tables raving about it. We took most of the brisket and the chicken home, to save room for the sides, biscuits and homemade banana pudding. I personally didn’t enjoy the pudding. Too much blending of vanilla wafers, and not creamy enough. But, all in all, I would say, go. Run. Loveless waits for you. If you arrive at 10:30 am you will probably not have to wait. And, they serve breakfast all day. Hash brown casserole? I must return!
