“Forty One” 1989 to 1993

We visited the museum on November 21st. We commented to each other that we didn’t think President Bush would last much longer, after the death of his beloved Barbara. Of course we had no idea that he would leave us so soon. The 41st president left us on November 30th.

Together again…

Together again…

As mentioned in previous posts, each Presidential museum and library take on the president’s personality. It is no surprise that George H.W. Bush’s museum is warm, inviting, traditional, humble, and family oriented. The exhibits lead you from photographs and memories of his parents and siblings, to meeting and marrying Barbara Pierce and their children. There is a section on his war service, as well as each of his public service careers. In spite of his best efforts to downplay his personal accomplishments, you can’t help be reminded of his extraordinary dedication to our country, regardless of your politics. He was a hero of WWII, and always remembered the troops with respect. As a congressmen he visited Vietnam 11 times during the war. He served as the head of the CIA, Ambassador to China, Vice President and President. After leaving office he and Barbara continued their public service being involved in several charities.

He had a few quotes that stood out for me during our visit. “There is just one use of power, and it is to serve people.” “As Vice President I have tried to keep my mind open to what other people think, even if I disagree...think that’s an element of leadership-not just talking but listening.”

We finished our visit by paying our respects to Barbara Bush. The memorial site is behind the museum past the rose garden. It is very simple, with a marker for the Bushes daughter Robin who died when she was 4, as well as the tomb of the former First Lady, engraved simply with the name Barbara Pierce, the date of her birth and her death. It was peaceful, and elegant. After his well deserved national recognition and services, Barbara’s love will join her and their daughter Robin and rest in peace.
