South of Congress, SOCO…

South of Congress, SOCO…

The Messinas, rebels that we are, managed to visit Austin and essentially skip the Top 25 Things To Do. If you are headed that way, don’t be like the Messinas. Check out the bats flying over the Congress Bridge, check out the amazing live music and BBQ scene, Cruise Lady Bird Lake.

We arrived in Austin on Thanksgiving day, and had a great low-key restful day. After 3 months on the road, sometimes you just don’t have the giddy up to get up and go! We did enjoy a stroll along South of Congress, and a great lunch and margaritas, because who can resist that? South of Congress, or SOCO as it is called, is the street referenced in the Keep Austin Weird Campaign, designed to promote small businesses in the area. True to the title, the street’s shops are definitely quirky. Local art, collectibles, funky clothes, hipsters and cowboys, they have it all.

With Tex-Mex and BBQ, you will never go hungry in Austin. The BBQ in Texas is primarily beef brisket, although they do it all. Naturally, the Texans claim that they invented BBQ, and that pork stuff in the Carolinas is not real BBQ. We were fortunate to get a great Uber driver who not only knew the city, but every single music act that weekend, advice on shopping, eating and walking. There were a couple great acts that we wanted to see. The Peterson Brothers were at the top of the list.

Austin, we shall return!
