San Antonio Spice
San Antonio, Texas is known for Tex Mex food, the River Walk, the Alamo, a mighty US military presence, the San Antonio Spurs, and a live music scene.
After our relaxing time in Austin, we were ready to explore and tick off a few of the must see and do boxes. We started with the River Walk is actually a 15 mile path, but most people only walk along the main section downtown, close to the Alamo, that is crowded with restaurants, bars and patrons. If you are in town for a longer period, and enjoy running or walking, there are some great, relatively quiet stretches along the river to explore. We dove right into the Tex Mex and tequila opportunities at the Iron Cactus , a Texas Chain with locations in Austin, Dallas and San Antonio known for the innovative Tex Mex cuisine with fresh ingredients and the finest tequila and margaritas ( https://ironcactus.com/)
We were starving , having missed lunch again...:( We started with the iconic Pork Tamale Pops appetizer which were served like lollipops, and had the consistency of inside out tamales, over a spicy, creamy chile dipping sauce. I couldn’t resist the Iron Cactus Double Barrel margarita made with Herradura double barrel reposado, cointreau, fresh squeezed lime juice , organic agave nectar and a chile salt dipped rim. Oh my! So smooth and flavorful, with no bite at all. I ordered the Chile relleno rustico, with cilantro and lime rice, and Chris had the grilled prawns wrapped in bacon, with Spanish rice and beans. The chile relleno was delicious, although if you are looking for a traditional chile relleno, don’t order it. The chile was stuffed with chicken, sun-dried cranberries, pepitas, pepper jack, toasted pecans, in a verde sauce. Very good, although a little sweet for me. Chris’ prawns were sweet, flavorful and huge! I know that there are many great restaurants along the River Walk, as well in other parts of San Antonio. But if you want a good experience, right in the middle of the action, give Iron Cactus a try.
