To Bend or not to Bend?
Have you been wondering whether it is time for a change of scenery? Are you one of the hundreds of thousands of Californians looking to leave the state because of the high cost of living? Perhaps you are planning retirement and are thinking of a place with better taxes? Part of our mission on Life is Better On The Road is to explore destinations with an eye on potential relocation and to share our data and impressions with you.
Our first stop was Bend, Oregon. First impressions were a vibrant city with live theatre, art and cultural attractions set in a natural wonderland of lakes and rivers. We conducted in depth interviews (if you call having lunch and beers with a friend who retired to Bend an interview :) ) and researched some key facts that matter to most people:
Population: Under 100,000
Elevation: Just a little over 3000
Weather: High desert provides extensive sunshine, short growing season and about 2 feet of snow per year
Healthcare: The state has high quality healthcare and a progressive approach to providing insurance options for all residents.
Taxes: no sales tax, but relatively high personal income tax
Housing: The median sales price is $481,000, and rents average around $1100 per month for a 2 bedroom apartment.
Yawn. Okay, that is important stuff. But the vibe matters too , right? Bend is a college town and has an interesting blend of outdoorsy people, hippies, alternative folks with purple (insert color of choice) hair, young families, brewmasters and retirees. Truly seems like something for everyone.
