Hi.

Welcome to our blog. We are documenting our midlife adventure across the USA on the road. Please join us and follow along. We would love to hear from you!

Yellowstone, part 2.

Yellowstone, part 2.

Entering Yellowstone from the West entrance in Montana takes you on a winding path from river to creek to river again. The prairies are interrupted by steep mountains and dense forests of Lodgepole pine and other cone-bearing trees, intermingled with the burnt sacrifices of previous fires. The Fall colors and the relatively low attendance and interference by human tourists make September and October an ideal time to visit this 2 million acre paradise.

“Take only pictures, leave only footprints” may be a cliche, but it is still the best way to experience the natural wildlife. This is their home. The bison are eating and resting. The Elk are climbing to reach the prime leaves and treats. The bears, if you see them, really do not want to see you. If you are fortunate, you won’t have your camera handy the whole time. You will have a few moments to simply experience the awe of being. That memory will be more real than any photo could ever be.

Exiting through the East into Wyoming abruptly transitions to steep and rugged cliffs. In geologic terms they are evidence of belts of eruptive centers. In human terms their stratified stark beauty is a result of previous volcanic activity and lava that formed the mountain range. Regardless of the details, they are stunning, especially if you are fortunate enough to see them with the sun beginning its evening rest and sliding down the mountains.

A beautiful ending to a beautiful day awaits you at the lodges, ranches or campgrounds along the highway on the way to Cody. Why not settle in with a local brew, or your favorite beverage and share in the magical sunset? Toast your footprints and relive the memories of your day in this national treasure. Cheers!
