The Amana Colonies, Iowa
As hubby and I were driving towards Cedar Rapids, Iowa I saw signs for the Amana Colonies. I googled them, and was very surprised to learn the history. Who knew, you may have known but I certainly didn’t, the history of the German immigrants who came to the US to escape religious persecution. They settled in Iowa, and were completely self sufficient. So much so, that when the US entered the depression they re-evaluated their communal off the grid living, and were able to assist the US, and make money at the same time. I told him I was disappointed that we would not have time to explore this area.
When we could find no park to stay the night, we back tracked to Amana RV Park. Talk about serendipity. What a great place to be. We were able to walk from our campsite to the historic Amana Colony. We had fun shopping , and dining at the Miller Stream brewery. We bought cheese and smoked meats and homemade bread and pie. Oh my!
The Amana colonies are interesting for their similarity yet distinct difference from the Amish. Well worth a serious data dive to learn more!
