A Light in the Darkness
I have always had a romantic attachment to lighthouses. Growing up in CA, I have visited many, and hiked to the top of those that allow it. The sea, the struggle, the battle between man and Mother Nature, and the lives of those who dedicated themselves as the keeper of the light have always fascinated me.
Today we visited two lighthouses in Maine. The Portland Head Lighthouse was commissioned by George Washington and was located at Fort Williams. As the owner of our last RV park said “You must go visit. George Washington walked there. Can you believe it?” The lighthouse, like the other one at Two Lights, was in great condition, but did not allow visitors inside.
I found interesting information about the first female lighthouse keeper in the US, Hannah Thomas. She carried on after her husband died in the revolutionary war and received 200 dollars a year (amazingly the same as her husband had received). First Woman Lighthouse Keeper in America, Gurnet Point, Plymouth, Massachusetts.
I always wanted to live in a lighthouse, not as a job, just as a home. If Hannah is haunting her lighthouse, I may need to visit and get some tips.
